You guys, I got sucked into the “Make Your Own Ribbon Wreath” rabbit hole last week while I was working on my fall decorating. And let me tell you, that rabbit hole is deep. But, the good news is that if you want to know how to make a DIY Burlap & Ribbon Wreath, I now know alllll about it.

Update: I took this beautiful fall wreath, and made some quick and simple updates to turn it into a VALENTINE’S WREATH. You can see it HERE.

There are literally thousands of incredible ribbon wreath creations on Pinterest, Etsy, YouTube, blogs….even Amazon.

I’ve seen so many adorable ribbon wreaths for sale, but they can be a bit pricey because they do require a good deal of ribbon, burlap, and other supplies that can add up quickly.

Wreath Making Inspiration

I looked at dozens of wreaths while I was brainstorming how to do mine.

“Ohhh, I like that!”, “Wow, look at that one!”, “That one is so cute!”.

I was amazed at all the great ideas and ended up pinning dozens for future inspiration. You can check out my Pinterest Board where I’ve pinned all my favorite wreaths.

Some of these wreath crafters are crazy talented! But don’t be intimidated! A DIY Burlap & Ribbon Wreath is really not that hard to make. If I can do it, you can too!

So, what’s a girl to do when she covets something but doesn’t want to fork out the dollars? DIY obviously. Plus, you then get the added benefit of being able to customize it the way you like.

Watch Some Tutorials

This is where I entered the “rabbit hole”. There are hundreds of excellent tutorials online for how to make wreaths and a wide variety of different versions of ribbon wreaths.

I ended up watching so many, that my head was spinning. I’m clearly behind the curve when it comes to YouTube…. I had no idea there was a video for literally everything.

Eventually, I settled on a style of wreath for my first creation and used THIS video tutorial to guide me. There were so many good ones, but I found this one easy to follow, and also entertaining.

I had the video playing on my laptop, right on the counter next to me as I worked on my wreath, so I could pause/play as I followed along creating my own.

Select Your Supplies

I bought my wreath frame at the Dollar Tree and everything else at Hobby Lobby.

All of the fall and Christmas crafting supplies were 40% off, and regular ribbon from the floral department was 50% off, so that helped make this more affordable.

Amazon is another place where I often find great craft supplies. You can scroll to the bottom of this post for links to the supplies needed for this wreath.

Supplies:

  • Burlap roll
  • Deco Mesh
  • 4 rolls of ribbon in coordinating colors and patterns
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Wire wreath frame (the one I used from Dollar Tree is 14″)
  • Embellishments (I used white pumpkin picks and a tin Pumpkin sign for the center)

PRO TIP: Don’t throw away any scraps of ribbon or burlap you have left! I used my extra pieces to make this cute DIY Ribbon & Burlap Garland!

Follow Along, But Customize Your DIY Wreath to Your Liking

I watched the video once completely through, and then I started it again, pausing at each step to craft my own wreath. I followed her basic instructions but wasn’t afraid to adjust a bit here and there as needed.

For example, my Deco Mesh was thicker and sturdier than hers appeared to be in the video, so I ended up using less than she did because my wreath was getting too bulky.

Some Final Thoughts…

This is definitely a “learn as you go” process. After doing it once, I have a better understanding of how it all fits together, and already have some changes in mind for my next one.

Yes, I said next one…. Based on the sheer number of videos and tutorials I found online, I have a feeling that wreath-making can be somewhat addictive.

One great thing about this wreath is that everything is held on simply by twisted pipe cleaners, so it would be incredibly easy to remove, replace, readjust, or even take it all apart and start over if you weren’t happy with the outcome, or simply grew tired of the look and wanted to update it.

On a neutral wreath like this, you could remove the pumpkins, and replace them with different embellishments at Thanksgiving, and even again at Christmas.

How fun and easy would it be to just keep giving your wreath a seasonal update?!

Scroll all the way down to the bottom to see some of my suggestions for updating this wreath to a Christmas version!

Hmmm….I am already thinking way ahead… Valentine’s Day, Easter, St. Patty’s Day, July 4th…

There’s that rabbit hole again. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya…

Update: After seeing my wreath, my daughter wanted one too. Here is the ribbon wreath I made for her…

DIY Burlap & Ribbon Wreath

Hobby Lobby did not have any more of the tin pumpkin signs that I used for the center embellishment, so I had to get something different.

I found this wooden Good Morning Pumpkin sign, but it had brighter colors on it that didn’t go well with the neutral wreath, so I just pulled some craft paints from my stash and toned down the sunflower and leaf a bit.

She was happy with how her finished ribbon, deco mesh, and burlap wreath turned out. Here it is on her front door. ❤️

  1. I love these wreaths, Niky!! so fun with all the different ribbon patterns. I’m sharing it Monday evening on All About Home. Thanks so much for coming by and joining in. We appreciate you being part of the fun!

  2. Hiii, really cool information and DIY! Because it’s neutral, it’s simple to alter for other seasons or holidays. Thanks for sharing the method! I had no idea wreaths were so addicting until you mentioned it!

  3. Question: for one wreath how much ribbon do you actually use per roll? I’m checking prints and prices and the holiday ones are definitely of better value but not as big a variety. So I’m wanting to buy at least one or two prints in the 4 yard rolls…. Just want to make sure I’ll have enough for 1 wreath.

I’m so excited to try this out!!

    1. Hi Betty,
I cut my ribbon into 12″ pieces. I used 8 pieces of each of the 4 different patterned ribbons. Since my rolls were 15 feet each, I used a little more than half from each of the 4 rolls of wired ribbon. Does that make sense?

Glad you’re going to try it. I’d love to see a picture of your finished wreath!

  4. I was wondering if anyone has tried this with deco mesh that is just 6” long instead of 10”. I wanted to use black and white and I couldn’t find the black in 10”, only 6”. Wondering if I should get the white in 6” and just use it the same way or “double up” the black so I use two pieces each time that overlap at the center so they still stick out 5”. Any advice? Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’m totally inspired and want to make a ton of wreaths!

    1. Hi Sue,
I think you could definitely use the 6″ mesh, and if I were you, I would for sure double up with the white to ensure you have enough fullness. After you have it attached to your frame, you could separarte the two layers so you have plenty of “fluff” and no wire shows through.

      I’d love to see a picture when you’re done. Happy wreath-making! 🙂

      1. Thanks! I already made my first one, psyched about how easy it was! How do I share a picture?! I can’t seem to add a picture to the comment.

    2. Hi Sue,
So sorry for the very late reply to your comment. I must have overlooked it. Apologies…
I think doubling up the deco mesh would work fine, and allow you to pull it apart with your fingers a little to “fluff” it up more and get more fullness in your wreath.
What did you end up doing? I’d love to see a picture!

  5. Hi Niki! We have ALL fallen into that rabbit hole . . . Pinterest was your first, rookie mistake. Not only is it a time sucker but it’s also a place where you just find too darn many ideas! Thank you for linking up this week. ~smile~ Roseanne
