Dried Hydrangea Fall Arrangement

If you’re lucky enough to have hydrangeas growing in your yard, then fall is the perfect time to cut and dry some, so you can make a lovely dried hydrangea fall arrangement that will last all season long.

The weather was beautiful this past weekend, so I spent a lot of time enjoying being outside and working on my Fall Front Porch.

My Little Limelight hydrangeas had advanced even more in their fall coloring since I last cut some, so I decided to clip a few more to bring inside and dry for a fall arrangement.

How to Make a Dried Hydrangea Fall Arrangement

Antique Stoneware Crock

I decided to use a very old stoneware crock that was my mother’s to display my flowers. I again used the same technique that I showed you before of putting just a little water in the bottom of a container and inserting it inside. This time, I found an empty plastic container that was the perfect size to fit inside my crock.

I filled it with about an inch or so of water, and set it down inside. This will allow the flowers to dry slowly, retain their color, and prevent them from getting droopy.

Arrange & Add Ribbon

After I had my hydrangea stems arranged how I wanted (and made sure each stem was submerged in the water), I had a few gaps that I didn’t like.

I had a roll of burlap ribbon on hand, that had just a bit of a golden sheen woven into the threads. I decided to use this to fill the gaps and add some extra interest.

I carefully tucked the ribbon up underneath, between the flowers and the rim of the crock, being careful not to damage the petals.

I then pulled the ribbon up through the gaps in between the flowers, to fill in some of the holes, and add some texture variation to the arrangement.

The tiny bit of iridescence in the ribbon complements the fall colors in the flowers.

One of the ends of the ribbon already had some curl to it, from being the last of the ribbon that was tightly wound on the spool. I liked that effect, so I just finessed the other end of the ribbon to get it to curl as well.

Add Embellishments

I had extra mini white faux pumpkins from my Fall Front Porch, so I tucked them in between the hydrangeas. Then, I displayed the finished arrangement on my upcycled Lazy Susan.

I love the variety of fall colors in these hygrangeas. I have 4 Limelight bushes, and they all get varying degrees of sunlight, so the colors don’t change all at the same time. By clipping a few from the different bushes, I can create an arrangement with so much visual interest.

Using old things for new purposes is one of my favorite ways to decorate. Now, this crock that my mom used to hold her wooden spoons for years, has a new chapter in its story. πŸ’•

  1. I love hydrangeas indoors and out. I would not have thought to add the burlap ribbon, what a great idea! Mine did not bloom this year, but I have an arrangement I made several years ago and it is still going strong in our living room. They last for years once dried, thank you for sharing.

    1. Wow, that’s great that they’ve lasted so long. I keep mine for a few years, too and find that even though they all come from the same Little Limelight hydrangea, they dry in slightly different colors each year. πŸ™‚

  3. I love your dehydrated fall centerpiece! Dried hydrangeas are sometimes even more beautiful than fresh, in my opinion! I love the colors they change to.

Question- Have you had any luck trying to store the dried hydrangeas to use for a later time or even next year? If so, let me know! πŸ™‚
