This DIY Christmas wreath with burlap ribbon is a great way to give your old and tired seasonal decor a whole new look.
Seasonal wreaths are so fun to make. You might remember THIS fall DIY burlap wreath I made, or THIS Halloween deco mesh wreath.

Both of these wreaths can be used to make the seasonal wreath of your choice by simply swapping out the ribbon and deco mesh colors, and the embellishments. Visit THIS post for the step-by-step tutorial.

DIY Christmas Wreath with Burlap Ribbon
This time though, I had a different kind of wreath in mind–a DIY Christmas burlap ribbon wreath with repurposed greenery.

I like to take special things out to my parents’ graves for each of the different seasons.
Sometimes it’s something I’ve found at a flea market or craft show that has some hand-made charm, but often it’s something that I make myself, especially during the holiday season.
A few weeks ago, as I started to think about what to take them for the Christmas season, I pulled this old Christmas arrangement on a headstone flower saddle.

It was faded, wind-whipped, and a little tired-looking, but I knew I could turn it into a beautiful wreath in not much time.
I snipped the greenery from the old gravestone saddle with a pair of wire cutters. It came off in one large piece.

I used a grapevine wreath that I got at Hobby Lobby as the base for my new wreath, but you could also use a wire frame or even a styrofoam wreath form, depending on how much old greenery you have to cover it.

I didn’t have enough greenery to cover the entire wreath ring, so I placed my greenery offset to one side, allowing part of the grapevine wreath to be exposed for a more rustic Christmas decor look.
Zip ties are the best way to attach the greenery to the grapevine wreath.
Since my wreath was going out to the cemetery, I used several zip ties to give it a little added protection against the wind. If you plan to display yours on the front door, it may not need quite as many.
Burlap Ribbon Bow

I wanted this to be a rustic burlap Christmas wreath, so I used 2 rolls of burlap ribbon in coordinating colors/patterns. It took a couple of yards of each roll of burlap ribbon to make a nice, full bow with big loops.
I tucked the bow into the greenery and attached it with a small piece of floral wire. (You could also use a pipe cleaner if you don’t have wire.)

To make pretty ribbon tails, I dovetailed each end of the burlap ribbon with just a simple scissor snip.
Cardinal Centerpiece
Because my greenery is offset to one side, I wanted something in the center of the arrangement that would make an impact.

Red cardinals are some of my favorite things to use for seasonal decorations and I happened to have this cardinal stake that I picked up from Dollar Tree last year.
It was an easy step to remove most of the stake using a hand saw. I left a small portion in order to make sure I could securely attach it to the inner rung of my grapevine wreath.
Another zip tie gave it some support, and then I also got out my hot glue gun and gave it a heavy dose of glue to make sure it stayed put.
The large size was perfect to add impact, and the bright red cardinal coordinated nicely with my cardinal burlap ribbon.

Embellishments
The final step was to add some embellishments to give the wreath some variation in texture and a pop of different color mixed into the greenery.

I had a variety of different types of floral picks, including Christmas picks with berries and pine cones, already in my stash. Tree ornaments wold also work well as embellishments.
I tucked each pick into the greenery and then secured it tightly on the back with more pieces of wire.
The final result is a cozy winter wreath with a burlap ribbon bow and lots of pretty red cardinals. It’s perfect for hanging on the front door at this time of year.

This particular wreath had a different purpose though, for which it was also perfect.

Wishing you peace, comfort, and all the joys of the season,

I never would have thought of using zip ties to attach greenery! That is genius. I also love how you set the greenery to one side and left the rest exposed. It truly is a a perfect Christmas wreath.
