Simple Wreath

I found this grapevine wreath while thrifting several months ago.

These types of wreaths usually cost about ten bucks at craft stores or on Amazon, so for three dollars at the thrift store, this was a good deal.

It had a few sparse conifer sprigs and pine cones attached with hot glue, but I knew that I could turn it into a beautiful homemade Christmas wreath in just a few easy steps.

Wreath Supplies

  • wreath base (grapevine, foam wreath, wire wreath form)
  • ribbon of choice for the bow
  • wreath insert
  • hot glue or floral wire
  • faux greenery, red berries, pine cones…

Make Your Own Christmas Wreath

A local landscaping and nursery near us was having its final sale before closing for the winter. All holiday decor was on sale for 40% to 75% off.

When I spied this adorable wreath insert for 75% off, and then remembered the sad grapevine wreath I had thrifted months ago, the idea for this DIY Santa wreath was born!

If you live locally, RUN up to Ted Lare Landscaping to grab one for this amazing price! If not, you can find it on Amazon for a little bit more, but still reasonably priced, in my opinion.

To create your wreath, start by attaching the wreath insert using the included wires. I simply twisted them around pieces of the grapevine.

Next, I wrapped a set of string lights around the wreath and throughout the already attached greenery.

I used Gorilla Mounting Putty on the back of the insert to hold the battery pack in place. This stuff is great! I’ve used it in our RV to hold stuff in place while bouncing down the road, and it sticks like a champ!

I used my amazing Bowdabra and some Santa wired ribbon to create a pretty bow for the front of the wreath.

Remember to dovetail the ends of your ribbon.

I rounded up a few leftover Christmas greenery pieces from other projects and used them to fill in the sparse areas around the greenery that was already attached to my thrifted wreath.

I firmly wiggled the picks into the crevices of the grapevines, but if you’re using a different type of wreath base, you may need to use hot glue or florist wire.

I cut apart one of the pics to use the smaller pieces to fill in some gaps in the greenery.

Festive Spirit in the Back Hall

Originally, I planned to hang this wreath on the front door, but after it was done, I decided that it would be a great way to brighten up the back hallway for the holiday season.

This is the area where we come and go most frequently. This cute new wreath featuring Santa’s face peeking out is the perfect way to add some Christmas cheer to this part of the house.

(I used this adhesive hook to hang my wreath without damaging the door.)

Other than the heavily discounted Santa wreath insert that I recently purchased, my wreath was made with items I already had on hand.

Making your own wreaths and other holiday decor can be inexpensive and fun if you hunt for supplies on sale, at thrift stores, and look through your own stash. You can even repurpose seasonal items to look brand new again. This is my favorite way to create new decor for this festive season.
