This month’s Pinterest Challenge, hosted by Cindy from County Road 407 is all about beautiful holiday garlands. My contribution is this rustic, winter woodland Christmas garland.
If you’re stopping by from Thistle Key Lane, didn’t you think Michelle’s jingle bell garlands were so fun! Simple, yet so festive!
How to Create a Woodland Christmas Garland
I love rustic woodland Christmas decorations, so I decided to create a garland using that theme.
Let me show you how I made my Woodland Christmas Garland.
This is the space I had to work with.

Garlands
One of my goals for this project was to use things I already had. In storage, I had three 9′ garlands that I’ve had for years. For the length of this banister, I was going to need two of them.
Unfortunately, none of them matched.
I ended up choosing the two that were most similar. One had large pine cones and one had a few small pine cones.

I decided this would work because I planned to fancy them up a bit anyway, so the different pine cone sizes would soon be disguised.
I started each garland from opposite ends of the railing, allowing some to hang down on each end, and then again where they met in the middle.
Lighting
There is no electrical outlet near this banister, so I needed some battery-operated lights. Happily, I found THIS amazing set on Amazon and they were perfect for this situation. The lights were one of only two things I bought for this project.
They are 33 feet long with 100 warm-white lights, so they easily covered both of these 9-foot garlands with just one set!
However, I loved them so much, I went back to Amazon and ordered a second set just in case I need them for something else!
Bows
Because I was creating a woodland Christmas garland, I wanted ribbon that was a neutral color, but still had some pizzazz.
I selected two spools of ribbon from my stash to combine into a double bow. One has sort of a rustic, jute texture, and the other is a white/silver cut-out ribbon with a bit of sparkle. It reminds me of snowflakes, which is perfect for my winter woodland vibe.
I used these two contrasting ribbons to create large double bows for the newel posts. I made sure to leave extra-long tails for added impact.
Pinecones
Remember how the two different garlands didn’t match because one had larger pinecones and one had tiny ones?
Luckily, I had some old pinecones that I had picked up outside, and I just hot glued them here and there to balance out the two different garlands.
Berries and Extra Greenery
Next, I wanted to fill out these two garlands and make them more substantial. Back to my stash I went.
I found some Dollar Tree winter berries in a sort of champagne color that worked great with my neutral color scheme. I used wire cutters to cut them into individual branches, and then tucked them into the greenery of the garland.
The Silver Dollar Eucalptus was from my daughter’s wedding two years ago that I saved and dried. I had several twigs of it that I used to fill in the garland for some extra texture and interest.

Woodland Christmas Ornaments
And finally, my cute little woodland owl picks! Isn’t this snow owl the sweetest little thing?
Two of these little white owls from Hobby Lobby are the only other thing I bought besides the light for this project. I already had the brown owl from last year. Remember him?

I just tucked my little woodland forest animal ornaments in along the garland.
There are so many different embellishments and ornaments that you could use to create a woodland Christmas garland. Here are a few ideas:

Your garland turned out so pretty Niky! I love all the woodland additions 😉
Niky, what a beautiful garland for your space. The bows are gorgeous and perfect for your theme. Adding more Pinecones was a great idea. I especially love your woodland owls.
Your garland on your stairs looks lovely, Niky! That bow is amazing, too!
Love your woodland theme; now you’ve got me wondering where I could use that theme this year! Thanks for the inspiration:)
I would have never thought to use woodland creatures for a Christmas garland but it’s fantastic Niky! And oh my lanta, you need to teach me how to make a bow like that! If it’s any different than a tying a shoe lace, I’m out. Everything looks amazing and I know it’s magical walking through that door. Thank you for joining in. Happy Thanksgiving! pinned
You’re so kind, Cindy. I love doing these fun challenges with you, so thank you for organizing them so well!
As for the bow, I finally found an EASY way to do it that is foolproof every time. I should have included that in my post! I will definitely include a tutorial in one of my upcoming Christmas posts. It might be just BARELY more complicated than typing your shoes, but not much! 🙂
I adore the woodland theme of your garland and the owls are just precious! The dried eucalyptus is a lovely addition too! Pinning!
hi niky, this looks so pretty! I pinned the staircase for the garland and the painted banister! Happy Thanksgiving. The bows are beautiful! laura
