Let me show you how to make a vintage button heart craft on reclaimed wood. Buttons, a piece of wood, and some hot glue are all you need!
This Vintage Button Heart Craft on Reclaimed Wood gives me all the feels. ❤️
It’s created from vintage buttons I brought home from my mom’s sewing room, and a piece of reclaimed wood from my dad’s garage.
Plus, my mom always signed all her cards and letters with XOXO, so I used my wood burning tool to add that to the bottom for a finishing touch.
This craft couldn’t be more simple to make, but it reminds me of people I love…. and that’s what Valentine’s Day is all about, right? 💕

Let me Show You How to Make a Vintage Button Heart Craft
Wood
I used a 7″x7″ square piece of wood to make my vintage button heart craft, but you can make yours any size you want. Before I began, I used a wide drill bit to make a hole in the back in case I want to later hang this up on the wall.
My Ryobi Drill
Paint & Distress
I used simple white craft paint and lightly painted the front of the wood square. Then I sanded the edges as well as distressed the top a bit.
I traced a heart in pencil using a cardboard craft heart I had leftover from my DIY Burlap & Ribbon Valentine’s Day Wreath.

Wood Burning Tool
Here’s a tip, so you can learn from my mistake. 😂 If you’re going to burn something into your wood, do it before you paint it.
Apparently, the paint conducts the heat in an odd way. After my first try, I had to start all over with a new piece of wood. It worked out okay though, because my second piece of wood was a bit larger, and ended up giving me more room for the letters anyway.
The second time, I burned the letters in, and then painted the whole square white, just lightly brushing over the lettering. Much better.

Buttons

I used vintage buttons in white tones from my mom’s sewing room, but you can use any buttons you like, new or old. It’s pretty easy to find vintage buttons at flea markets and antique stores or even on ETSY. I have another whole jar of them that I bought several months ago, before I found all these of my mom’s.

I simply used hot glue to fill in the pencil heart outline. I added buttons on top of other buttons to fill in some of the open gaps, and give the heart some extra dimension.

I really love the neutral tones of my heart, but this would also look beautiful with either pink buttons on the white painted wood, or even painting the wood a very pale pink. For even more contrast, you could stain the wood instead of painting it.

For now, I have mine displayed on my mantel as part of a simple Valentine’s Day vignette, but I think I may hang it up in my laundry room after Valentine’s Day is over.

What a perfect craft for Valentine’s day! Thank you so much for sharing with us at Encouraging Hearts and Home. Pinned.
Do you find that wood burning is hard to do? Because, I love the look of it.
The letter stamps are super easy to do! The other tips take a bit of practice. You can see how I tried a few when I made my Wood Slice Christmas Ornaments, which was the first time I used the wood burning tool. It’s easy to get the hang of though!
What a great idea! I have some leftover pieces of wood I’ve been wondering what to do with. Now I know!
Simple and beautiful! Love it!
What a sweet Valentine’s Day craft, Niky! It’s even more special that you used your mom’s buttons. I love the wood burning detail that you added. Now I want to try wood burning, too! It was fun hopping with you. Happy Valentine’s Day!
I LOVE your vintage-style button heart. I have a collection of buttons just waiting to be used.
Hugs,
Kippi

Niky,
This is such a cute and inexpensive idea. I’d like to share it on my weekend round up tomorrow.
Rachel, I’d love that! Thanks so much! ❤️
Niky I love how special this heart is. Using your mother’s button was a creative way to share her memories. Love how your heart looks. Very pretty.
this is so cool! Now I wish I would have kept all the old buttons instead of selling them in the estate sale! This is why I should never get rid of anything! thanks for sharing your talents!
Niky, I love this so much! My mom always ended with X’&O’s too.
Fantastic job! Pinned!
Love this!!! Thanks for the inspiration, friend!
I love that you used buttons from your mom sewing room, so sweet. I have a jar filled of my moms button I kept. I love to make something like this.
