Sundays on Silverado #33

Life Lately

Weekend Getaway

We didn’t take any fancy beach vacation to a warm and sunny locale for Spring Break, and I have to admit, it was painful to see all the lovely pics from friends in my social media feeds. Instead, we are waiting for the time to be right, and saving our resources and vacation days for some big and big-ish trips in the near future. I can hardly wait.

For the past 20ish years, I’ve spent my Spring Break in D.C. with up to 250 middle schoolers. We got cancelled last year, just a matter of hours before boarding our flight, and obviously this year was a bust, too. It felt so strange not to be in D.C., and suprisingly, really sad too. I guess I didn’t quite realize what an integral part of my life it had become, especially now when I’m not sure what the future holds for the trip.

With a little extra time on our hands than usual, we did take a weekend getaway just a couple of hours from home. We booked a hotel in a sleepy little town on the banks of the Mississippi River. We strolled along the river, stopped at a couple of scenic overlooks, ate inside a restaurant for the first time in over a year, relaxed in our room with a lovely view, took a leisurely drive through the historic district of town and swooned over all the amazing houses that sit high up on a hill overlooking the river, and then stopped at some more antique shops on our way home. It was the perfect way to spend a couple of relaxing days together.

Happy Birthday to The House on Silverado! 🎉 🎂

This week was the second birthday of The House on Silverado! I had a post all planned to commemorate the day, and then life happened. My husband called from work and said they were taking him to the ER in a wheelchair (he works in the hospital). I dropped everything and jumped in the car. It turned out to be a kidney stone, and after about 6 hours in the ER, thankfully he was finally feeling well enough to be discharged to rest at home. 💕

Apparently, birthday posts for the blog are not meant to be, because last year, the first birthday slipped by before I even remembered, because we were all so caught up in the beginning of the pandemic.

So, with not much fanfare, Happy Birthday to The House on Silverado–the little blog that began as a wild idea, turned into a fun hobby, and now is growing into a money-making business. I’m excited to see what year 3 will bring.

In Case You Missed It…

This week I shared a sweet little Easter Dough Bowl Centerpiece that is so easy to put together. If you’re decorating for Easter, this makes a cute centerpiece for your Easter table, a coffee table, or your kitchen island. I also shared the recipe for these delicious, chewy, sweet and salty bars from The Great British Baking Show cookbook. They make a perfect snack, and would be great as an Easter dessert, too.

Coming Up…

It’s Two-for-Tuesday at The House on Silverado this week, because I’m participating in two blog hops that both go live on Tuesday! Here’s a sneak peek…

Be sure to come back on Tuesday to see my latest contribution to the Pinterest Challenge, and also my post for the Spring/Easter Home Tour with several other bloggers! 🐰🌷🏡 🌸🐥

  14. Hi Niki That little town you went to for your break looks so lovely. Someplace I would like to go to. Small and not to crowded. I live in Nebraska could you tell me the name of the town if you don’t mind

    1. Hi Claudia,
The town we stayed in was Muscatine, Iowa. We stayed in The Merrill hotel. We dined in their restaurant and they also had a lovely old buildling right next door with a cute martini bar and coffee shop. I would recommend NOT going on a Sunday, as many things are closed in town.
We also stopped in Kalona, Iowa on our way to Muscatine, which is a cute little Amish town with many Amish bakeries, grocers and antique/craft shops. That’s where the church antique shop was. 🙂

  15. Oh goodness you’ve been busy and I’m glad your husband is OK! That’s scary…especially these days. Thanks for hosting and Happy Sunday!

  16. My coffee and I could sink our teeth into one of your nutty apricot blondies this morning. Yummy! Enjoy your downtime at home this year for spring break.

  17. Hi Niky, Happy Blogaversary! Glad you were able to have a lovely little getaway~your Easter/Spring vignettes are adorable! Thanks for the party 🌷
