Life Lately
Instead of “The House on Silverado”, we’re going to have to rename this place “The House of Bad Knees”.
On Friday, we found out my husband’s arthroscopic knee repair in April did not work, and now he needs a total knee replacement asap to prevent more damage to his femoral bone. He’s scheduled for next month.
Then, on Saturday, Penny Puppy was holding one leg up and yelping in pain, so we ended up at the emergency vet. Guess who also needs knee surgery? Yup, it’s a two-for-one deal around here, I guess.
Both patients are on pain meds and anti-inflammatories for the time being. Mark’s surgery is scheduled with a top-notch surgeon, so he’s in good hands. Now we are working on a referral to a pet orthopedic surgeon, so if anyone local has a recommendation, I’d love to hear from you.
In general, we’ll take any advice you have for human total knee replacement recovery, as well as managing a pup after grade 3 luxating patellar surgery.
Hopefully all my body parts hold out a while longer, so someone can hold down the fort. 😖
Both patients are supposed to limit use of their bad leg. Mark is better at following those directions than Penny. Getting a two-year-old energetic pup to understand the doctor’s orders of “no running or jumping” is a challenge for sure.
Her daily walks now involve a buggy.
In happier news, by the time you read this, our youngest son will be a married man. We’ve had several days of wedding events, with family and friends in town from multiple states.

Oh my goodness, poor puppy. I am so perplexed though how a two year old puppy could have a bad knee. I’m sorry to hear about your husband too. I have no tips for knee replacement surgery but I know a lot of people who had them and they all were much happier and glad they got it done.
I love the autumn vibe of the inspiration today.

Sorry to hear about your husband and the knee replacement. I had a partial knee replacement, so all I can say is strictly follow medical instructions. Do not overdo it when you think it’s OK. Walk, do the exercises and stretches as prescribed, and do the physio diligently. Healing takes time; it’s a long road ahead but worth the pain and effort. Hugs and best wishes

Oh, Niky! I’m so sorry to hear about the upcoming surgeries. Although I have plenty of meniscus stories to tell, I haven’t made it to replacement. As for Penny, we went through that with my daughter’s dog. After surgery, she came home with a pain patch that lasted several days. A dog playpen was purchased to limit her activity (that was helpful!) and she didn’t want to eat, so peanut butter was a great bribe. Later, we had to encourage her to put the paw down and use the leg – kind of like PT. The best news? She recovered well and the leg is now fine. Wishing you, your husband, and Penny all the best!
