Life Lately
Happy Mother’s Day! My son is taking me to lunch later, and then I hope to spend some time outside with a book and a pup on my lap. 😍
We got our flower beds and garden planted this week. It’s my favorite time of the year–gardening season!
We went a bit smaller this year so that there was less to maintain, but we still have our favorites– 4 different tomato varieties, 2 cucumbers for salads and pickling, bell peppers, and jalapenos.

New this year, I planted leaf lettuce so I can try an old-fashioned recipe my mom and dad used to make– wilted lettuce. Have you ever heard of it? I’ll be sure to share when my lettuce harvest is ready and I make some!

We did something different this year with our flower beds after “the tulip incident”. (Penny ate a tulip leaf in case you didn’t see on my IG Story.) I had to call the ASPCA Poison Control Center because tulips are toxic to dogs.
For some reason, she likes to sniff and nibble every plant she comes in contact with. I sure hope she outgrows this habit. 😖
For that reason, we made a point to plant dog-safe flowers in our annual flower beds and pots this year, as many of the flowers I usually plant were not safe. I didn’t want to spend my whole summer having to keep her away from everything, so petunias and impatiens are the stars of the show this year. My beloved sweet potato vines were bypassed this year.
Since our flower choices were limited, I bought these beautiful firefly solar lights to add to the flower bed under the hydrangea tree. I love them even more than I thought I would!

We have had some absolutely perfect weather lately, leading to lots of time spent outside. Fortunately, little Penny likes to relax on the deck as much as we do. ❤️

We also managed to squeeze in a bike ride. Here’s Penny’s deluxe ride. She’s a nature-loving pup and doesn’t want to be left behind.

After the bike ride, we enjoyed our first local patio cocktail and dinner of the season at a new place in town. It was excellent.

I had a doctor appointment out of town, and our favorite outdoor flea market was halfway between there and home, so we decided to take Penny along and stop to check things out. Unfortunately, it started raining soon after we arrived, so we didn’t stay long and only made one purchase– this vintage Disney book, “The Rescuers”, because Penny is named after the little girl in the story.

“Pup”, as the kids call her, is definitely not a “stay-at-home” puppy., She’s not quite 9 months old, and gets to tag along most of the time. She especially loves visitng the grandbabies. Here is Evie showing us how the “pup” was laying.

In Case You Missed It…
I have harvested my rhubarb twice now, including my new Crimson Red plant for the first time. I made a rhubarb galette and also some delicious rhubarb crumb bars to take to someone in the hospital. I hope to have that recipe ready to share with you soon! Until then, here are two of my very favorite rhubarb recipes.

And last but not least, I want to wish my parents a happy heavenly anniversary. Today would have been their 57th. Later this evening I will venture out to the cemetary with some flowers for them.
Today is one of those years that we called the “trifecta” when their anniversary, Mother’s Day, and our former beloved pup’s birthday all fell on the same day. Wish they were all still around to celebrate.
