July 4th Basket Vintage Decor Ideas

Ten ideas to create simple and easy July 4th basket decor using vintage treasures.

It’s time again for another fun Pinterest Challenge, hosted by Cindy from County Road 407! This month’s challenge is all about creating a beautiful basket with vintage patriotic decor.

If you’re finding your way here from Blue Sky at Home, I’m sure you loved Carol’s Fourth of July basket using recycled materials as much as I did.

If you haven’t heard about the Pinterest Challenge before, here’s how it works: Several different bloggers take the same photo, and create something similar that will work in their own homes, and with their own style. It’s so fun to see all the different interpretations of the same photo!

Rachel over at The Antiqued Journey is the creator of this cute inspiration photo. I love how she used a collection of things from around her house to create this look.

My July 4th Basket Vintage Decor

To create my own version of Rachel’s patriotic basket, I grabbed a basket and shopped my basement storage area for vintage items that fit the red, white & blue color scheme.

Here’s what I came up with:

• thrifted basket
• antique Americana book
• natural jute twine
• patriotic colored scarf
• blue & white vintage Currier & Ives dishes
• faux white flower stem
• antique Calumet Baking Powder tin
• American flag made from a vintage spool
• vintage Uncle Sam toy bank

Basket

I couldn’t find a basket with a center handle in the appropriate size for this project, so instead I used a dark basket with two side handles. I lined it with a red, white & blue scarf.

Uncle Sam

Since I didn’t have a large vintage can like Rachel’s Campfire Marshmallows can, I tucked in this Uncle Sam toy bank from my husband’s childhood. It adds some height to the arrangement.

Book

Rachel used books as the base of her arrangement, but one of my very favorite items is this vintage book, so I wanted to highlight it next to Uncle Sam. Instead of ribbon, I used simple twine wrapped around the old book.

Vintage Dishes

My blue and white Currier & Ives dishes seemed like the perfect companion to this vignette. I tucked in a couple of saucers and cups.

Vintage Tin & Faux Flowers

This Calumet Baking Powder tin belonged to my grandmother.

Try as I might, I could not remove the lid, so rather than force it, I just tucked the stem of tiny white flowers in behind it for a similar effect.

Flag

Several years ago, I picked up this cute flag made from an old spool in Kansas City’s West Botttoms (I wrote about my antiqueing weekend trip waaaay back in the early days of my blog. You can see it HERE).

I use this little flag every year in some sort of patriotic display and it always reminds me of my favorite place to hunt for treasures.

Finishing Touches

Once I thought I had my basket done, I stepped back and took a look and just felt like it needed something else. I perused my storage room again, and came up with these tiny vintage baking utensils, also from the West Bottoms.

The sweet little red tin was my great-grandmother’s. It still holds cloves inside and has a label in her handwriting, too.

With the little bit of red paint on the handles and the tin, they worked nicely for this vignette.

I displayed it on my dining table with a pretty blue striped table runner. It makes an interesting seasonal centerpiece that causes people to stop and look at each piece– often spurring fun conversations and memories from guests as well.

A Moment in Time

My favorite thing about vintage groupings like this is that they not only function as lovely seasonal decor but also prompt little glimpses of memories and connections to our past.
