It’s hot in Iowa right now. So hot. And humid. When it’s this miserable out, we need all the tools we can get to combat it. Easy Red Wine Slushies are a heavy-hitter for dealing with sweltering summer weather.
I saw this on Facebook this week and it made me laugh. And you thought there were just four seasons? Not in Iowa.

Wherever you are, if it’s hot (or if you just like wine), this wine slushie is going to make you happy.
How to Make Easy Red Wine Slushies
Wine
Inexpensive wine works great for this recipe. I like to save our better bottles of wine to enjoy by the glass, but when I’m going to mix it up with other ingredients, a lesser quality bottle will work just fine.
I try to keep a couple of bottles of less expensive wine on hand for mixing up fun concotions like this.

Choose a sweeter variety of wine, because you want your slushie to be a bit sweet. Any kind of red blend, or even a red moscato would work great.
Freeze
You do have to plan ahead a bit for this drink, because your wine needs to freeze for at least 4-5 hours. But, if you’re smart, you can keep some frozen wine in your fridge, ready and waiting at all times.
Old-fashioned ice cube trays would work well for freezing your wine, but if you’re going to leave some in the freezer for an extended amount of time, you’ll want something covered or sealed.
A silicone tray with a lid would be perfect, or just a good ol’ zippered freezer bag works too.

Pour the whole bottle of wine into the tray or zippered bag, and freeze for at least 4-5 hours.

If you’re using a zippered bag, lay it flat to freeze. This will make it much easier to break into pieces when it’s time to blend it up. I placed mine flat on a baking sheet with edges, just in case it leaked. You don’t want frozen red wine all over the inside of your freezer.
Blend
Sadly, I didn’t get any pictures of the blending. What can I say, I was multitasking and making dinner at the same time I was trying to whip these up for us to enjoy as a pre-dinner sip on a hot evening. In the fray, no pictures got taken of this step.
But, fortunately, since these are Easy Red Wine Slushies, you aren’t missing much because of no photo.
Here’s how you do it:
- Gently bend the bag of frozen wine to break it into a few large pieces that will fit in your blender. Or, if you used cubes, just pop them out and into the blender.
- Toss in a handful of frozen berries. I used blueberries, but strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, or a mixture would all work perfectly. About 1/3 of a cup.
- Pulse in your blender until the berries are blended and you have an icy, slushie consistency.
- If you need additional liquid, add in a splash of juice–cranberry, lemonade, orange juice… whatever is in your fridge. If you don’t have juice, a little Sprite or club soda would work too. Just add a little at a time though– you don’t want it to be too liquidy. (Note: the slushie pictured for this post required no additional liquid.)
That’s it!

Serve
Pour it into a wine glass or any cocktail glass of your choice, and serve it right away.
Be sure to drink it with a straw, because that’s how slushies are meant to be enjoyed, right?
Cheers,
