A Made-to-Order Omelette Bar for Your Special Someone

My husband is such a good man. He is so generous and giving, and regularly puts everyone else before himself. For Father’s Day, I wanted to do something special for him, to make sure he knew how much he deserves to be appreciated.

My Turn to Make Him Breakfast…

My husband is the breakfast chef in the family. I’m more of just a coffee drinker in the morning, while he, on the other hand, is ready for a full-on meal shortly after waking up. As a result, he’s almost always the one who ends up making breakfast on the days he’s off in the morning.

Before Coronavirus, when I was getting up to go to work everyday, he would make sure I had a hot cup of coffee waiting for me the minute I stepped out of the shower. See what I mean? He’s special.

So for Father’s Day this year, I decided to spoil him with a special breakfast that he could just sit back and enjoy. That’s where the idea of the Made-to-Order Omelette Bar came in.

On many of our travels, we’ve stayed at resorts or hotels that have offered customized omelettes for breakfast, and that is almost always what he orders. Since all our summer adventures this year have been cancelled, I decided to bring the omelette bar to him!

Make Your Menu Card

I started by making this very simple menu card. Since the omelette would be the star and take a few minutes to prepare after he “placed his order”, I kept the rest of the menu simple.

Fresh Squeezed OJ

I got up earlier than him, and squeezed the oranges. The mimosa was more for me–he elected for just plain fresh-squeezed OJ, which is also one of his faves.

I also made a mixed fruit bowl, with some of our fresh-picked strawberries from the strawberry patch, so he’d have something to enjoy while he waited for his omelette.

I am a “give-me-all-the-coffee-as-fast-as-you-can” kinda girl, but my hubby prefers to enjoy his morning coffee after breakfast, preferably with something sweet to accompany it. With this in mind, I made sure we had our favorite Hawaiian coffee (which we first had in Hawaii on our honeymoon) on hand. I took some help from the store, and purchased an almond pastry to go with it.

I had him circle the ingredients he wanted in his made-to-order omelette right on the menu card, and then I set to work creating it while he relaxed with his OJ and fruit bowl.

Sautéing and Coffee Drinking

I used two pans–one for making the omelette, and one for pre-cooking the ingredients. The eggs will cook quickly, so you want to make sure the filling ingredients are hot, and cooked to your desired level of doneness before you pour your eggs into the other skillet.

I was already enjoying my second cup of coffee during this step, because since I had pre-chopped everything, I only needed one hand to do the sautéing! Winning.

I started with the onions, peppers and mushrooms first, because they need the longest to soften. Then, the tomatoes, and finally the bacon and Canadian bacon, because those were pre-cooked.

Ready for the Eggs

Plan for 2-3 eggs per omelette depending on egg size and appetite. Crack the eggs into your mixing bowl, and add in your seasoning. I just used a little salt, and a generous amount of fresh ground black pepper.

Then, add a splash of milk or water. The steam released from the water or milk during the cooking process will prevent your eggs from browning or becoming overcooked.

Mix well with a whisk or fork.

Preheat the Pan and Add the Eggs

Make sure your pan is preheated, but not overly hot. Enough to melt about a tablespoon of butter without it browning.

Then pour in your egg mixture and immediately pick up your skillet and swirl it around to get the eggs to coat the entire bottom of the pan.

Then, use your spatula to gently pull the mixture away from the sides, and tip the pan to allow the runny eggs to fill in the gap. Keep doing this on all sides until the top of the egg is wet, but no longer runny. Make sure you keep your heat on medium to low, so the bottom is not overly browning while you do this.

Now, you should be able to get your spatula under the egg, and gently flip it over. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect– you can hide any tears with cheese. 😂

Add Some Cheese

Add your cheese of choice to the egg now. This acts a bit like glue, to hold your filling in better when you get read to plate it. Hubby chose cheddar and Gouda for this one.

Now, add your filling on one side only. Mark really likes cheese, so I added a bit more on top of the filling. 😃

Use your spatula to fold over the side with no fillings. Let it stay in your warm skillet a few more minutes until it is nice and melty.

If your special someone likes cheese as much as mine, put some more on top for good measure.

Now, wouldn’t that make you happy to be able to sit back and relax while someone served this up on your plate? That’s your goal!

Coffee and a Sweet Treat

After eating his omelette, hubs was ready for his first cup of coffee, and me my third. 😜. I served his up with a big slice of this almond deliciousness.

Still Not Enough

Of course, later that day, there were gifts, a barbecue with family, craft cocktails, and fresh strawberry pie.

But you know what? Even a full day of love and attention is still not enough to equal all that this man gives to other people. I know, it sounds cheesy, but he really is that good. He deserved every bit of this day, and a million more. ❤️

It’s about making your “special someone” actually feel special…

This made-to-order omelette bar was perfect for Father’s Day, but it would work well for so many other occasions, too. It’s a great way to make someone feel special. Experiences create memories better than things. Therefore, what better way to show someone you love them than with an act of service rather than just buying them something. I mean, gifts are nice, especially if they are well-thought-out gifts, but giving someone your time, your effort, and your presence is something they will really remember. How you made them feel lasts far longer than anything money could buy.

Let me know if you give the made-to-order omelette bar a try, or what other ideas you have for making the people you love the most feel special. I’d love to hear from you!

  2. This is such a sweet idea. I love the idea of doing something made to order for a special occasion. – And, you can’t really go wrong with an omelette! I might try a pancake version of this. Thank you for joining us for the #DreamTeamLinky.

    1. A pancake version is a great idea, Annette! I used to do something similar when my kids were small. I’d set out bowls of various pancake mix-ins or toppings, and let them tell me how they wanted their pancakes made (chocolate chips, blueberries, strawberries…) and then let them top it how they wanted too, with flavored syrups, whipped cream, peanut butter… They LOVED it!

  3. Congratulations! Your awesome post is featured on Full Plate Thursday 492, this week. Hope you are having a great week and thanks so much for sharing with us!
