Fall is here for real…
Happy October, Friends. Fall is in full swing now, there’s no denying it. The days are cooler, it’s getting dark way too early, and the leaves are definitely changing colors. There is a lot about fall that I really do love…if it weren’t for the fact that I know winter is shortly behind.
These two memes depict my fluctuating feelings right now…
Batten Down the Hatches
We were in the garden a couple of days ago, picking the last few straggler tomatoes and peppers, and I said, “It’s about time to batten down the hatches.” My husband thought my choice of metaphor was funny, but also accurate. Winter in central Iowa can involve a lot of snow, wind, and ice. There’s a lot that has to be done outside to be prepared for winter.
I started this week by beginning to trim up my $5 roses so I can get them covered for winter. Do you remember when I got these on clearance at Lowes because they were almost dead? Look at them now!
Fall Arrangement for the Cemetery
Now that fall is here, I tidied up at my parents’ grave this week. I took away the live plant that I had placed there for the summer, and replaced it with this colorful fall arrangement that I made for them.
One thing that I do enjoy about fall is watching all the farmers get into the fields to harvest their crops.
When I got home from work on Friday afternoon, I was able to catch just a glimpse of this combine harvesting the corn on the other side of the pasture.
We were also excited to see “our” eagles have returned 🦅. We got used to seeing the pair throughout the winter and spring, but this summer we didn’t see them at all.
As the farmer continued his harvest, we watched this eagle swoop down over the part of the field that was already done, and then back to the tree again. With our binoculars, it became apparent that he was catching rodents that had been scared from the field by the combine, and then bringing them back to the tree to eat them. There’s always something to see around here…
Here’s my view this morning, now that the corn is down. When the crops are growing, we don’t get to see the tops of those century barns over the hill.
Meal Prep for the Work Week
Because we were gone last weekend, I didn’t have time to get my lunches for the week ready, so one night this week when Mark was working, I prepared another batch of Chicken Burrito Bowls for the freezer.
We are still enjoying our Hello Fresh meals 3 nights per week. This picture is why I’m loving it right now. We were able to put this delicous meal together easily one night after work, allowing plenty of time to eat outside in the screen porch and enjoy (the now earlier) sunset.
We’ve been experimenting with fall flavors in our cocktails lately. These Apple Cider Martinis have been made twice already.
And when I pulled into the driveway Friday after work, my husband was waiting for me in a lawn chair in the driveway with this Apple Cider Moscow Mule! Now that is how you get your Friday night started, right?
This Week’s Features!
Isn’t this beautiful?! I tried my hand at a Peach Galette this summer, but this apple one needs to go on my “to-do” list! That caramel sends it right over the top!
I have several orange pumpkins in my stash that could use a makeover like this!
This combines my love of vintage dishes and white pumpkins. These “transferware” pumpkins that CoCo made with napkins and Mod Podge are brilliant!
Isn’t this old-fashioned wagon filled with heirloom pumpkins so cute? When I saw it, I immediately started braintstorming places where something similar would look great at my house! You’re already giving me ideas for next fall, Debra!
Thanks to all who linked up with Sundays on Silverado! Can’t wait to see what else you have to share this week. Link away!
