Not gonna lie, I have a lot of anxiety over this whole quarantine/pandemic stuff. Anyone else? I shared some of the reasons why in a post earlier this week. I really hate worrying about the people I love, especially when there isn’t much I can do to keep them all protected.
I’ve been trying to combat my nervous energy with staying busy. I’ve been texting, talking on the phone and video conferencing with colleagues as we try to figure out what “distance learning” will look like for our students.
My husband and I have been taking long walks nearly everyday, and doing some spring yard work, too, just to get some fresh air and exercise.
I’ve been baking and cooking because it’s a good distraction to experiment with new recipes, as well as comforting to make family favorites that remind me of happy family gatherings and memories.
And, I’ve been cleaning and organizing like it’s nobody’s business. I have wanted to get my pantry organized ever since I made these rolling pantry crates back in December. Well, my new “friend” Quarantine came along and cleared my calendar last week over spring break, making sure I had plenty of time to get that done. 😣
Rolling Pantry Crates
These DIY rolling pantry crates were the inspiration for the pantry makeover. Once I got these babies up and running, it made me want to organize the rest of the pantry, too.
These creates are so cute and functional. They hold so much, and roll out from under the bottom shelf smoothly, making it super easy to access the contents.
One rolling crate is fully stocked with coffee right now. Because ain’t nobody wanna run out of coffee during a pandemic, amiright?
Here’s my nice and tidy pantry….
The pantry is in the back hallway of our house, right off the kitchen. It has a door, but because we pop in and out of the pantry so frequently, the door is almost always open for convenience. This makes it even more important for the pantry to be tidy and organized.
Everything in its place, and a place for everything makes me happy. It’s strangely comforting for it to be all so neat and tidy, don’t you think? Who’s with me on this one?
I really like having labels on everything, too. I think it just adds to the tidy appearance of the pantry, but it also is helpful when we’re unloading groceries and putting things away. It prevents things from just getting dumped anywhere on the shelves, because the labels make it really clear where things should go.
It also makes it really easy when looking for a particular ingredient or creating a shopping list, because all the items of a similar kind or purpose are together. Therefore, if you’re looking to see if you have spaghetti sauce, you know exactly where to look. If it isn’t in that one certain bin, then you know you need to add it to your list, rather than hunting through every shelf all over the pantry.
I bought several clear plastic bins for the sole purpose of organizing my pantry, but I also rounded up various baskets from around my house to use, too. This saved me some money, cleared some clutter from other areas of the house where these baskets weren’t necessarily needed, and worked well for some of the bigger items in my pantry.
The very top shelf of my pantry is hard to reach, so having odds and ends in these little baskets that I can grab and pull down makes it easier to find what I want. These baskets were all repurposed from an old shelving unit that used to hold hats and gloves before we moved to the new house.
This spinning Lazy Susan is perfect for holding our coffee syrups and another holds our vitamins.
Finally, a few plastic totes keep various baking items, like sprinkles, cupcake liners, food coloring, birthday candles, etc all together. I can lift these totes down and easily take them to the kitchen counter when baking.

I ordered all these plastic bins from Amazon in a variety of sizes. Because they are clear, it’s easy to see what’s in them. Plus they wash up really easily if anything gets leaky inside them, and the adhesive chalkboard labels I used stick really well on them.
When we were building our house, we hired a company to design all the closets. I asked for drawers in the pantry, but the drawer unit they suggested was ridiculously expensive. I found this one at The Container Store, bought it myself, and had the closet people design the rest of the shelves to make it work. It’s a great addition to the pantry. There is an option top that we also purchased, which you can see in the pictures of my pantry.
I used the sticky labels above on my plastic storage bins, but I used these with clips on a lot of the baskets that I used in my pantry.
